Hillcrest Wildlife Management Area Stream and Wetland Restoration Project
The North, South, and Middle forks of Tomlinson Run flow through the Hillcrest Wildlife Management Area in Hancock County, West Virginia. Long ago, the streams were straightened and wetlands drained for agriculture. This caused the streams to form gullies that cut them off from the floodplain, increasing erosion and reducing habitat for fish, bugs, birds, and amphibians. The restoration design for this project included innovative ideas for recreating natural meanders by constructing a pattern of riffles and pools based on patterns found nearby in undisturbed areas. Over 13,000 feet of restored stream and 26 acres of improved wetlands now absorb and filter pollution and provide great wildlife habitat.
