2024 Funding Program Launched for Appalachian communities

Jan 11, 2024

Downstream Strategies has worked with Appalachia communities for over 20 years. By providing community planning, economic redevelopment services, feasibility studies, and environmental remediation guidance, communities and neighborhoods are renewed with new life and opportunities. Our expert planners take a personal interest in seeing rural communities flourish through downtown redevelopment, recreational and tourism initiatives, and brownfield property redevelopment.

As community planners, Downstream Strategies is eager to share news about the upcoming 2024 Opportunity Appalachia program. This program aims to provide technical assistance to coal-impacted communities in West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia. The ramped-up program will select 30 projects throughout Appalachia focusing on downtown development, healthcare, education, recreation and tourism, food systems, manufacturing, affordable housing, and clean energy. Each project could be awarded $40,000-$75,000 in technical assistance funding.

On January 18, 2024, Opportunity Appalachia will host a webinar about the expanded program with speakers from the Appalachian Regional Council, Richmond Federal Reserve Bank, and Appalachian Community Capital. This program will connect up to $150 million in capital investments to Central Appalachian community projects.
