Landscape architecture design

Downstream Strategies’ landscape architecture design services focus on sustainable and functional environments. With knowledge of native plants and wildlife ecology, we develop resilient landscapes that enhance biodiversity while serving Appalachian communities. Our projects range from small parklets to large-scale urban and regional plans, and our graphic design serves as a bridge between technical reporting and community outreach.

Site analysis and planning

  • Evaluate soil, climate, topography, and drainage
  • Incorporate cultural, historical, and social context and consider visitor needs and future desired uses
  • Assess options for restoring habitat and preserving existing vegetation
  • Address zoning ordinances, land use regulations, legal covenants, and easements
  • Analyze environmental opportunities, impacts, and constraints
  • Facilitate community input sessions, including public hearings and stakeholder meetings

Design

  • Create conceptual and detailed designs for:
  • Parks and recreational areas
  • Gardens and residential landscapes
  • Urban plazas and streetscapes
  • Sustainable infrastructure
  • Campuses, business parks, and institutional grounds
  • Develop hardscape elements such as paths, walls, and seating, as well as softscape elements such as plants and trees
  • Incorporate sustainable practices, including stormwater management and native planting
  • Rehabilitate degraded landscapes and identify healthy habitats to preserve

Presentation and documentation

  • Use CAD, GIS, and 3D modeling software to create renderings and presentations for client and public feedback
  • Provide graphics, booklets, and reports for use in acquiring implementation funding
  • Create cost estimates and phasing strategies

Oglebay Resort and Park Trail Concept Plan

Downstream Strategies worked with Oglebay Park to develop a trail concept plan. The trail concept plan identifies the best locations for mountain bike-optimized trails within the park, makes recommendations about how to broadly plan trails to meet the needs and desires of anticipated user groups, and provides important guidance to park management on how to proceed and budget for trail development.

Green Infrastructure at Cool Spring Nature Preserve: Concept Plan

For the Potomac Valley Audubon Society, we facilitated executive focus group input meetings and community forums to identify and review problem areas and propose green infrastructure implementation at the Cool Spring Nature Preserve in Charles Town, West Virginia. The resulting concept plan showcases a variety of green infrastructure practices for educational purposes while addressing drainage, erosion, and other issues on the property.
